Past Information About The Edmonton Oilers Hockey Team
The professional hockey team known as the Edmonton Oilers was originally founded in 1971 in Alberta, Canada and played in the World Hockey Association beginning in 1972. During the 1978-1979 season, the Edmonton Oilers won the World Hockey Association Championship. The following season, the Edmonton Oilers were one of four teams from the World Hockey Association to join the National Hockey League. It didn’t take long after joining the NHL for the team to achieve great success; the Oilers won the Stanley Cup five times between 1984 and 1990. One of hockey’s most recognized players, Wayne Gretzky, was part of the team for nearly a decade, and he helped lead the team to four of the Stanley Cup victories. Wayne Gretzky still holds the NHL records for most goals and assists in a season. Because of the accomplishments during the 1980′s, the team is recognized by the Hockey Hall of Fame as having “dynasty” status. Throughout the 1990′s, the team’s record made quite a decline, but the team made another run for the Stanley Cup most recently in the 2005-2006 season. The team continues to move forward with the hopes to reclaim its proper status in National Hockey League history.
