All You Need To Know About The Edmonton Oilers
Based in Edmonton, Alberta, in Canada, The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team. The NHL (National Hockey League) places them in the Northwest Division in the Western Conference. Founded in 1971, The Oilers, as they are mostly called, was one of twelve founding franchises of the WHA (World Hockey Association). Originally called The Alberta Oilers they took on their present name of the Edmonton Oilers in 1972. It was when the NHL merged with the WHA, the Edmonton Oilers were given NHL membership in 1979.
Becoming a part of the NHL, the Oilers have gone on to the finals and subsequently winning the professional ice hockey’s highest achievement, The Stanley Cup, five times. Winning from 1984 to the 1990 season, has earned them the status of “dynasty” in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Oilers went on to greatness under Coach Glen Sather, who performed coaching duties for 23 years. In 1978, the Oilers new owner, Peter Pocklington, acquired Wayne Gretzky as well as goaltender Eddie Mio and forward Peter Driscoll. Wayne Gretzky, still, holds the record for most points in a game in one season. The Oilers also hold the records for, most goals in one season by a player, most assists in one season by a player and most goals scored in one season by a defenseman amongst others.
